There’s a famous quote, sometimes attributed to Mark Twain, sometimes to Will Rogers, that goes “Buy land, they’re not making it anymore”. Whichever of those witty gentleman said those words they weren’t entirely true. We adapt Okanagan lands every day, for better or worse. This is as our BC cities and our population grow and the need for housing grows right along with it. Development has become something of a dirty word in the Okanagan but it helps individuals, families and businesses move here and live comfortably.

The challenge is adding homes without contributing to urban sprawl and encroaching on our wildlife’s natural habitats. It can be hard to strike a balance. Most experts agree that densification is one of the easiest ways to mitigate the environmental impacts of urban growth but not everyone wants to live in an apartment. Subdividing existing lots can provide an excellent solution when land is limited, that is profitable to the existing property owner, adds vital homes to the market and makes use of already existing infrastructure.
